ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Grandsire

Grandsire is a special way of ringing bells in a church tower. Imagine you have a lot of bells (maybe 6 or 8 or even 12!) all hanging in the tower next to each other. In order to make a tune, you need to ring the bells in the right order over and over again.

Now, with a normal way of ringing bells, you would just ring them one at a time, going down the line. But with grandsire, you ring them in a special pattern that sounds like this - ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, dong...and so on.

But the tricky part is that not all the bells ring in that pattern! Some of them ring two times for every one time the other bells ring. Some of them even ring three times for every one time the others ring! So, the people ringing the bells need to listen very carefully to make sure they all play their part in the right order and at the right time.

It takes a lot of practice and skill to make the grandsire pattern sound just right, but when you do, it sounds very beautiful and makes the church tower ring out with a happy tune.
