Grist mill

A grist mill is kind of like a big machine that helps make flour out of grains, like wheat or corn! The mill has these big spinning stones inside called millstones that grind up the grains into tiny pieces.

Before grains can go into the grinding mill, they have to be cleaned to get rid of any dirt or rocks that might be in them. Once the grains are cleaned, they go through a funnel and are dropped onto the millstones. The millstones grind up the grains and turn them into flour!

When the flour is all done, it comes out the bottom of the mill and is placed into bags or barrels. People use the flour to make delicious foods like bread, cake, and cookies!

Grist mills were very important a long time ago because they helped people make food for their families and their communities. Even though we can now buy flour at the store, old-fashioned grist mills can still be found all around the world!
