ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Group 16 hydride

So, imagine you have some building blocks, like Legos. Now, each of these building blocks is made up of smaller parts called atoms that stick together.

One type of atom is called oxygen, which is in a group called group 16 on the periodic table. This means that oxygen likes to bond with other types of atoms in a certain way.

Now, sometimes oxygen can bond with another type of atom called hydrogen to make something called a hydride. In group 16, there are different types of hydrides, but they all have oxygen and hydrogen atoms sticking together.

These hydrides are important because they can do different things. For example, one type called water is what we drink to stay hydrated and live. Another type called hydrogen peroxide can be used as a cleaner or to bleach things.

Overall, group 16 hydrides are just different types of building blocks made up of oxygen and hydrogen atoms that do different things depending on how they are put together.
