Gustation is when you taste something with your tongue. Your tongue has tiny little bumps on it called taste buds. When you eat or drink something, your taste buds send a message to your brain that tells you what you are tasting. There are four main tastes that your taste buds can detect: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Some people can also taste a fifth taste called umami, which is kind of like a savory or meaty flavor. So, when you eat a piece of candy, for example, your taste buds tell your brain that it is sweet. Or if you eat a lemon, your taste buds tell your brain that it is sour. Overall, gustation helps you enjoy your food and know what you like and don't like to eat.
