ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gusuku

Gusuku is a special kind of castle that was built long ago in a place called Okinawa, which is a group of islands in Japan. In the olden days, these castles were used to protect people from bad guys who wanted to hurt them. They had tall walls all around them and were built on high hills so that it was harder for enemies to get to them.

Inside the castles, there were many rooms where people could stay safe during an attack. There were also big open spaces where soldiers could train and get ready to fight.

Gusukus were built using big rocks and stones that were cut into just the right shape so that they could fit together perfectly. The people who built these castles were very smart because the stones were so heavy and it was hard work to make them fit together just right.

When you visit Okinawa today, you can still see some of these old gusukus. They are very special because they remind us of a time long ago when people had to work together to stay safe and protect their families and friends.
