ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hōnen

Hōnen is a man who lived a long time ago in Japan. He was a very important person for a religion called Buddhism because he created a new way for people to believe in it.

Hōnen thought that it was very hard for ordinary people to follow all the rules and rituals that Buddhism had. So, he made a new way of practicing Buddhism where people only needed to repeat one special phrase to be saved. This special phrase is called the Nembutsu.

Hōnen's teachings became very popular and many people started following him. However, some other Buddhist leaders didn't like what he was doing and they tried to stop him. They even put him in jail!

But even when he was in jail, people still believed in his teachings and kept following them. When he was released from jail, he continued to teach and share his ideas until he passed away.

Today, Hōnen is remembered as an important person in Japanese Buddhism history because he started a new way of practicing Buddhism that still exists today.
