Half-mast

Okay kiddo, imagine there are two flags outside. Sometimes when something sad or bad happens, the people who take care of the flags decide to lower them down halfway. This is called putting the flag at half-mast. It's a way to show respect and sadness for what happened. Just like we might put our heads down or have a moment of silence when we're sad.
