ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hanja

Okay, imagine that you're learning how to read and write in English, right? Well, in Korea, they have their own writing system too, called Hangul. But, the funny thing is that a long, long time ago, they used to use Chinese characters called hanja to write things down.

Nowadays, most Koreans use Hangul to write everything because it's simpler and easier to learn. But sometimes, they still use hanja in some words to make it easier to understand what the word means. It's like a secret code that helps them guess what the word might mean just by looking at the characters they use.

So, hanja is kind of like the grandma of the Korean language. It's not necessary to know, but it can help you understand things better if you do. But, just like how grandma might talk in a different language sometimes, hanja can be a little tricky to learn.
