ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hariti

Hariti is a lady who used to be a very mean and scary monster in ancient Indian stories. She would steal little children and make them her dinner! That was until the Buddha decided to help her one day. The Buddha talked to Hariti and told her that stealing children was very bad, and that made her feel very sad. The Buddha told her to stop being so mean and to take care of children instead.

So Hariti decided to listen to the Buddha and change her ways. She started to take care of children and make sure they were safe and happy. She even started teaching other people how to be kind to children too! People started to like Hariti and think of her as a kind and caring person instead of a scary monster.

Nowadays, people still talk about Hariti and see her as a symbol of how someone can change for the better. She reminds us that it is never too late to become a better person and help others.
