ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Harkis

Okay kiddo, so a long time ago in a country called Algeria, there were some people called Harkis. The Harkis were Algerians who helped the French army fight other Algerians who were fighting for their freedom. The French promised the Harkis that they would be safe and protected if they helped them.

But after the French left Algeria, things didn't go so well for the Harkis. The people they had fought against were really angry with them, and they were treated very badly. Many Harkis had to leave their homes and find new places to live. Some of them even went to France, because the French promised to take care of them.

But even in France, the Harkis were not always treated well. They often faced discrimination and didn't have many opportunities. Many of them and their families struggled to make a living.

It was a really tough time for the Harkis, and many people feel that they were not given the respect and support that they deserved. Today, people are working to make sure that the Harkis' stories are remembered and that their contributions to the history of Algeria and France are recognized.
