ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Harmonics (electrical power)

Have you ever heard a very high or very low pitched sound and you thought, "That doesn't sound right"? That's because those sounds are called harmonics. In the world of electricity, harmonics are caused by different frequencies that can be mixed up and create strange noise.

When we use electrical power, we need it to be in a steady and consistent flow. But sometimes, when we use electronics like computers or televisions, they create tiny disruptions in that flow. These small disruptions are harmonics, and they can cause a few problems.

If there are too many harmonics in our electrical power, it can cause some devices to break down or stop working. Think of it like your toy train that has to go on a track. If the track is really bumpy or twisted, the train will have a hard time moving forward. That's what happens with harmonics and electrical power. They make the power "bumpier" or "twistier" than it should be, and some devices just can't handle it.

Luckily, there are people who can fix this issue. They use something called a harmonic filter, which acts like a "cleaning crew" for the electricity. It filters out the unwanted frequencies and makes the power flow smoother.

So, in short, harmonics are like those weird sounds you sometimes hear, and they can cause problems with our electrical devices. But we have special tools to fix it and keep the electricity flowing smoothly.
