ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Harrowing of Hell

Okay kiddo, so remember when we talked about how Jesus died on the cross and then came back to life? Well, after he died on the cross, he went to a place called Hell. But it wasn't the same as the Hell you hear about in scary stories.

This was a place called the "limbo of the fathers" or "realm of the dead" where people who died before Jesus was born were waiting to go to Heaven. They couldn't go to Heaven yet because Jesus hadn't yet opened the gate to Heaven.

So, when Jesus went to the "limbo of the fathers," he told everyone there that he was the Son of God and that he had died on the cross for everyone's sins. He even showed them the wounds on his hands and side.

This news made everyone very happy, and they all believed in Jesus. Then Jesus led them out of the "limbo of the fathers" and into Heaven, where they could finally rest in peace and happiness.

This is called the "harrowing of hell" because Jesus went into the depths of Hell and freed the souls trapped there. It's a reminder that Jesus not only died for our sins but also conquered death itself, which is something that should give us all comfort and hope.
