Heat lightning

Hey kiddo! Let me tell you all about heat lightning. Sometimes on a hot summer night, you might see flashes of bright light in the sky. This is called heat lightning.

You might wonder why it's called heat lightning. That's because it usually happens after a hot day when the ground and air are warm. This causes lightning to occur far away from where you are, and you can't hear the thunder because it's too far away.

Did you know that lightning is actually caused by electricity? When tiny particles in the air move around really quickly, this creates a charge, like rubbing your feet on carpet and touching something metal. When the charge is strong enough, it can create a spark, and that spark is lightning!

Heat lightning is usually seen at night because the sun's heat is not there to make the charge happen anymore. The lightning can be pretty to look at, but you should always be careful during storms and stay inside so you don't get hurt by the lightning.

So, that's what heat lightning is, my little friend. A bright, flashing light in the sky that happens after a hot day because of electricity called lightning. Remember to be safe during storms!
