ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hebrew acronyms

Have you ever seen a bunch of letters that stand for something else? That's called an acronym! In Hebrew, there are lots of acronyms, which means they use the first letter of each word to make a new, shorter word that stands for something bigger.

Let's say you wanted to talk about a place called Tel Aviv University in Hebrew. Instead of saying all those words every time, you can use the acronym TAU! It's easier and faster to say.

But sometimes even the acronym is too long! So Israelis use another trick called a Hebrew initialism. That's when they take the first letter of each word and smoosh them together without making a new word. For example, if you wanted to talk about a place called Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, you could use the Hebrew initialism טכ׳-ישראל, which is made up of just the first letters of each word.

Acronyms and initialisms are a big part of Hebrew culture, especially in government, military, and technology. They make it easier for people to communicate and remember important things without having to remember a long phrase. So next time you see a bunch of Hebrew letters that don't make sense, keep in mind that they're probably an acronym or initialism!
