ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Heckscher–Ohlin theorem

Okay kiddo, imagine you and your friend love to draw. You like to draw animals and your friend likes to draw buildings. You both have a lot of pencils and papers to use.

Now, imagine if your mom gives you a set of colored pencils and your friend's mom gives her a set of rulers and compasses. Because of these gifts, you can now draw better and faster animals while your friend can draw better and faster buildings.

This is what we call the Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem in economics. It says that countries specialize in producing goods that they have more resources for. Just like you and your friend have different resources to create better drawings, countries have different resources like land, labor, and capital to produce certain goods efficiently.

For example, imagine a country like India that has a lot of people (labor), but not much land. They might specialize in producing clothing, which doesn't require a lot of land but needs a lot of labor to sew and stitch. On the other hand, a country like Brazil might have a lot of land (for agriculture) but not many people (labor). They might specialize in producing coffee or cocoa, which needs land but not so much labor.

So, just like how you and your friend use your gifts from your moms to create better drawings, countries use their resources to produce certain goods more efficiently. And that's what the Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem is all about!
