ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Helicon (physics)

Okay kiddo, let me explain what helicon is in a way that is simple and easy to understand!

Have you ever seen a big magnet before? It's really strong and can pull things towards it. Well, imagine a big magnet that is wrapped with a wire like a candy cane. When we send electricity through the wire, it creates something called a magnetic field.

Now, imagine we have a tube filled with gas and we put this magnet inside the tube with the wire wrapped around it. When we send electricity through the wire, the magnetic field actually starts to wiggle and move around the gas inside the tube.

This wiggling magnetic field creates waves in the gas called helicon waves. These waves move around the gas as it heats up and becomes energized. This is really interesting because by heating up the gas we can actually study the different reactions and processes that happen when matter is heated up.

So, that's what helicon is all about! It's a cool way to study how matter reacts and heats up when we apply a magnetic field to it. I hope that helps you understand, kiddo!
