ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hex editor

A hex editor is like a special type of computer program that you can use to look at files and make changes to them.

Now, when you look at a file on your computer normally, it just looks like a bunch of words, or different types of media like pictures or videos. But, behind the scenes computer files are actually made up of a bunch of tiny pieces called "bytes".

A hex editor lets you look at these bytes in a way that's much more organized and easier to understand. Instead of showing the bytes as normal characters, a hex editor shows them as numbers and letters that you can read and understand.

So, if you want to make changes to a file, like maybe you want to change some text or edit a picture, you can use a hex editor to find the part of the file you want to change and then you can change the bytes to make the file look different.

Just like when you use a crayon to draw on a piece of paper, using a hex editor to make changes to a file can be really powerful and fun!
