Hidden mother photography is a type of vintage photography that was popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In these photos, photographers would pose babies or young children for portraits, but often times the mother would try to hide herself and remain out of the frame.
This was because in those days, cameras were not so advanced like today, and it was difficult to keep a child or an infant still for a long time during a photo shoot. So, the mothers used to hide behind curtains or put on a cloak, hold their child, and blend in with the background to make sure their child would stay still during the picture-taking process.
Sometimes only their hands, arms, or a small part of their dress would show in the photo, and other times they would be entirely hidden. This made the resulting image look slightly eerie or strange with just the visible part of the mother in the photo, but was a unique way for the mother to be a part of the portrait too.
These photos were often cherished by families and have now become collector’s items. They provide a glimpse into the past and give a sense of the creativity and innovative thinking of photographers during that period.
