ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

High-definition optical disc format war

So, you know how you have your favorite toy and your friend has their favorite toy? Well, sometimes grown-ups have favorite things too, and they can get really serious about it.

In the early 2000s, two companies had an idea for a new way to watch movies at home. One company was called Sony and the other was called Toshiba. Sony's idea was called Blu-ray and Toshiba's idea was called HD DVD.

Both of these ideas were like regular DVDs, but they could hold way more stuff, like better picture quality and more special features.

But Sony and Toshiba couldn't agree on which idea was better, so they started a big fight called a format war. They tried to make everyone choose which one they liked more, and some people really loved Blu-ray and some people really loved HD DVD.

It was like when you and your friend argue about which is better, Barbies or action figures. But this fight was really big and grown-up and lots of money was involved.

Eventually, more people chose Blu-ray and Sony won the format war. But it was a really long and difficult fight, and it took a while for everyone to start using Blu-ray.

Nowadays, we can enjoy high-quality movies at home thanks to Blu-ray, but it was a big battle to get there!
