High-intensity discharge lamp

Imagine you have a lightbulb that's really, really bright. So bright that it's sometimes used to light up entire streets or sports fields. That's called a high-intensity discharge (HID) lamp.

Where regular lightbulbs use a wire that gets hot to create light, HID lamps use something called gas and metal vapor. When you turn them on, an electric current activates the gas and metal vapor inside the bulb, which creates a bright, visible light.

In simpler terms, these lamps use gas and metal vapors to make really bright light, which is great for outdoor lighting like streetlights or sports arenas.
