ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hilaire de Chardonnet

Hilaire de Chardonnet was a man who invented a kind of fabric called 'artificial silk' that is made from chemicals instead of from animals like real silk. He wanted to make a fabric that was cheaper and more practical.

To make this fabric, Hilaire de Chardonnet mixed chemicals together to create a liquid. He then pulled this liquid through tiny holes to create long threads. These threads were then twisted together to form a strong and flexible fabric.

This artificial silk was very popular because it was cheaper to produce than real silk, and still felt soft and silky. People could buy clothes made from artificial silk that looked just as good as clothes made from real silk, but without the high cost.

Thanks to Hilaire de Chardonnet's invention, people around the world now have access to affordable and high-quality clothes made from artificial silk.
