Historical flags of the British Empire and the overseas territories

A flag is a piece of cloth with designs and/or words on it that represent certain countries and territories. In the past, the British Empire was a large group of countries and territories (places like India, Canada, and South Africa) that were all ruled by the same government. Each of these countries and territories had a particular flag that represented them and their connection with the British Empire. The flags usually included the Union Jack, which is a combination of the flags of Scotland, Ireland, and England, and which was used to show the connection between the different parts of the British Empire. Some of the flags also had a symbol that was particular to that country or territory – like a lion, a maple leaf, or an elephant.
