ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of Azerbaijan

Hello there! Today we're going to learn about the history of Azerbaijan, but I'm going to explain it to you like you're five years old.

Azerbaijan is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, between Europe and Asia. It has a long and complicated history that goes back thousands of years.

In ancient times, Azerbaijan was home to many different people, including the Persians, Greeks, and Romans. Over time, various kingdoms and empires rose and fell in Azerbaijan, leaving their mark on the region.

One of the most significant periods in Azerbaijani history was the rise of the Shirvanshah dynasty in the 10th century. They ruled over the area for nearly four hundred years and built many beautiful monuments and buildings, including the palace complex in Baku, the capital city.

In the 16th century, Azerbaijan became part of the Safavid Empire, which was based in nearby Iran. The Safavids were known for their artistic and cultural achievements, and they left a lasting impact on Azerbaijani culture, particularly in the areas of poetry and music.

In the 19th century, Azerbaijan became part of the Russian Empire, which brought both modernization and oppression to the region. The oil industry flourished in Azerbaijan during this time, and Baku became known as the "Black City" due to the pollution caused by the oil industry.

After the Russian Revolution in 1917, Azerbaijan became independent for a brief period before being incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1920. During this time, Azerbaijan saw significant industrialization and modernization, but also suffered from political oppression and economic hardship.

In 1991, Azerbaijan declared its independence from the Soviet Union and has since worked to develop its own democratic government and economy. Today, Azerbaijan is known for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes, and thriving oil industry.
