History of Montenegro

Montenegro is a small country in Europe. People have been living in Montenegro for a very long time - even before it became a country.

A long time ago, different groups of people lived in Montenegro. They all had different cultures and languages. In the 9th century, a group of people called the Slavs came to Montenegro and settled there. They were known as the Serbs and they brought their culture and language with them.

In the Middle Ages (around 12th-15th century), Montenegro went through many changes. It was influenced by different empires - like the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire. During this time, many wars were fought in Montenegro and people had to fight to protect their land.

In the 19th century, Montenegro became a country. It was its own independent nation. At first, Montenegro was ruled by a prince. The prince's name was Nikola, and he wanted his country to be successful. He made many reforms and improvements to Montenegro, like building schools and roads.

But in the early 20th century, Montenegro became a part of a bigger country called Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was made up of different countries in that area of Europe. Montenegro was a republic in Yugoslavia.

In the 1990s, Yugoslavia fell apart. Montenegro became a part of a new country called Serbia and Montenegro. But in 2006, Montenegro became its own independent country again. People who live in Montenegro are proud of their history and their culture. Today, Montenegro is a beautiful country with mountains, beaches, and lots of history.
