ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of brassieres

Brassieres are pieces of clothing that are usually worn by girls and women to support their breasts. The earliest known bras were made over 600 years ago, but they looked very different from what we wear today.

Back then, women would wear a cloth band around their chest to flatten their breasts and make them look smaller. It wasn't until the late 19th century that bras as we know them began to be made. They were often just two separate cups held together by straps that went around the back and over the shoulders.

During the 20th century, bras became more tailored and fitted, with different designs for different body types. There were also new materials like elastic and spandex that made bras more comfortable and supportive.

Today, there are many different types of bras to choose from, including sports bras, push-up bras, and strapless bras. They come in all sorts of colors and styles, and can be worn for many different occasions. Regardless of the type of bra, their main job is to help girls and women feel comfortable and confident in their bodies.
