ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

monoid

A monoid is like a "machine" that takes two things and combines them into one. For example, a food processor takes vegetables and combines them into a soup. A monoid is like a food processor, but it takes any two things (such as numbers, or bits of information) and combines them into one. It always produces the same result, no matter what two things are put into it, so it's like a machine with a predictable result.
