ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of chess engines

Imagine that you're playing a game of chess and you're trying to think ahead to all of the possible moves that your opponent might make. It's a really hard game to play, and it's even harder to be really good at it! That's why people started creating what we call "chess engines."

A chess engine is a computer program that can play a game of chess. It's like having a really smart friend who can tell you all of the best moves to make, and even what your opponent is likely to do next.

Chess engines started to be developed in the 1950s, when people were just starting to build computers that could run complex programs. These early chess engines were pretty simple, and they weren't very good at playing chess compared to even an average human player.

But over time, people kept improving the chess engines. They added more and more features that let the program "see" the board more clearly, and they worked on ways to make the program make better decisions about what moves to make.

Today, there are some chess engines that are so good that they can beat almost any human player! In fact, there are even tournaments where human players compete against chess engines to see who can win.

But even with all of the advances in chess engine technology, nobody has been able to create a program that can "think" the way that humans do. That's why people still love playing chess against each other, even if they know they could never beat a top-of-the-line chess engine!
