ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of manga

Manga is like a really cool comic book, but it comes from Japan. It all started a long, long time ago in the 12th century, when people made picture scrolls to tell stories. Then, in the 18th century, people started to make small picture books called kibyoshi, which were used to talk about political issues.

But it wasn't until the 20th century, in the 1920s, when modern manga really started. There was a guy named Osamu Tezuka, who is like the "father of manga" because he created a lot of famous manga characters like Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. He made manga popular by drawing it in a style that was easy to read, and his stories were exciting and fun.

Manga became really big in Japan, and soon it spread to other countries too. People loved the cool and quirky characters, the intense plots, and the unique drawing style. Manga is now recognized around the world as a big part of Japanese culture, and it continues to be very popular with both kids and adults.
