History of passive solar building design

Passive solar building design is a type of building design that uses the sun's energy to help keep the building cool during hot months and warm during cold months. This is done without needing any extra energy, like electricity, to power the building.

The history of passive solar building design dates back thousands of years. It began in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, where people would build their homes facing the sun. These buildings would have large windows on one side that the sun could shine through, helping to keep the inside of the buildings warm during chillier months.

In the 1800s, scientists used the same principles to make greenhouses that could help keep plants warm when it was cold outside. Soon, architects began to apply these principles to construction of homes and buildings. They started building houses that faced the sun, and had windows on one side that let in the sun's energy.

In the last 50 years or so, passive solar building design has become even more popular. Architects now use sun-friendly materials in construction that are well-insulated and able to absorb and store the sun's energy to help keep buildings warm and cool when needed.
