History of salt in Middlewich

Salt has always been important to the town of Middlewich in Cheshire, England. It dates all the way back to the ancient Celts and Romans, who used it to preserve food and for trading. In the middle ages, salt was an important trade item and was used to produce flavoring for food. In the 19th century, Middlewich was nicknamed ‘salt town’ because of the number of salt works that were located in the town. Those salt works have been there ever since, and produce the salt that is used in food products, medicines, and even for industrial purposes. Salt is important to Middlewich because it has helped the town to make a living for hundreds of years.
