ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of the Philippines (900–1521)

So kiddo, a really long time ago, way before you were born, there were people called Austronesians who travelled all over the world. Some of them ended up in a place now called the Philippines.

From 900 to 1521, different groups of people lived in the Philippines and they were called small kingdoms. Each of these kingdoms had their own king or queen, and some of them were called barangays. The barangays were like villages where people lived together and helped each other.

The people who lived in the Philippines before the Europeans came were called the Indigenous people. They spoke different languages and had different cultures, but they all lived together peacefully. They were skilled in farming, fishing, and trading, which helped their kingdoms grow bigger and stronger.

But then, in 1521, a man named Ferdinand Magellan from Spain came to the Philippines with his fleet of ships. He wanted to claim the Philippines for his country, and he met some of the kings and queens of the barangays.

At first, the Indigenous people were curious about the Europeans and their technology. But later, they didn't like how the Europeans treated them. They wanted to keep their own culture and traditions, but the Europeans wanted them to follow new rules and beliefs.

So, the Philippines became a part of the Spanish Empire for more than 300 years. During this time, the Spanish changed the way people lived, the language they spoke, and their religion. They also introduced different kinds of foods, music, and traditions to the Indigenous people.

However, the Indigenous people were not happy with the Spanish rule. They fought back and had many revolts, but they were not successful in becoming independent. It took many years before the Philippines finally became a free country.

And that, my young one, is the long story of the Philippines from 900 to 1521.
