History of the Scottish National Party
Well, little one, have you ever heard of Scotland? It's a beautiful country up north where lots of people live and they have their own government kinda like how we have a president here in the United States.
A long, long time ago, Scotland was its own independent country with its own king and queen. But then they joined together with England to make one big country called the United Kingdom. For many years, some Scottish people were happy being part of the UK, but some felt like they wanted Scotland to be its own separate country again.
Fast forward to the 1930s and a group of people got together and decided to create a political party called the Scottish National Party (SNP). Their main goal was to try and become an independent country once again and to have more control over things like the economy and government.
Over the years, the SNP grew and became more popular with people who also wanted to see Scotland become independent. They started winning more and more seats in the Scottish Parliament and even had their own leader, Nicola Sturgeon, who became Scotland's First Minister.
In 2014, the SNP held a big vote, called a referendum, to see if people wanted Scotland to become independent from the UK once again. Even though 45% of people voted "yes," the majority voted "no" and Scotland remained part of the UK.
But the SNP didn't give up and they continued to work toward their goal of independence. In 2019, they won a big election and became the largest party in the Scottish Parliament, giving them more influence and power to try and achieve their goal.
