ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hohmann transfer

A Hohmann transfer is like a shortcut for a spacecraft to travel from one planet to another. Think of it like walking in a circle around your house. It takes the same amount of time to walk the whole circle, but if you take a shortcut like walking diagonally - you can get to the same place faster! In a Hohmann transfer, a spacecraft leaves Earth or another planet in one direction and flies in a curved path until it reaches another planet. It uses the gravity of the planets to bend its path and save time and fuel. So, just like when you take a shortcut to get somewhere faster, a spacecraft can get to another planet faster with the help of a Hohmann transfer!
