ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hoist (mining)

A hoist in mining is like a really big elevator that goes up and down a mine shaft. Mines are underground tunnels with lots of levels and different types of tunnels. Miners need to get up and down and move things like rocks and equipment up and down as well.

So, imagine a big elevator that is meant for moving heavy things up and down a mine shaft. It's like a big metal box that moves up and down on cables. The box is attached to a motor and a power source that helps it move up and down smoothly.

The miners and their equipment can get into the box and then be lifted up out of the mine to the surface. The hoist is really important in mining because it allows the miners to get in and out of the mine safely and quickly. Without it, they would have to climb up and down ladders, which would be really dangerous and take a lot of time.

So, the hoist is like a big metal elevator that helps miners move up and down a mine shaft quickly and safely, kind of like a ride at an amusement park, but for mining!
