Hologenomics

Hologenomics is a Funky new idea in Science! You may know that your body has many tiny living things called microbes that live both inside and outside of your body. Some are helpful while others can make you sick. Hologenomics is the study of how these tiny microbes (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other micro-organisms) affecting all life especially humans, plants, and animals.

There are more than 100 trillion (100,000,000,000,000) of these little microbes in your body that are essential for your health. Your body must work with these microbes, who behave like tiny ecosystems, to get all its job done. Sometimes, microbes also help to digest food, and they play a role in shaping our immune systems. Every person, animal, and plant has their unique mixture of microbes. Scientists study these microbes to develop better products, such as medicines, that work well in everyone.

To study these little creatures, scientists often use your poop or saliva. Yuck, right? But it helps those scientists to figure out which microbes are in your body and how they help your body. They can also study the microbes of plants and animals!

Scientists also use machines, such as microscopes and computers, to understand how the little microbes work. They use fancy techniques to understand how the microbes change genes to keep making things better all the time. Scientists want to understand these little ecosystems better to help develop better medications and treatments for sicknesses. How amazing is that!
