ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Home wiring

Imagine you have a big toy box filled with all of your toys. Each toy is different and needs a different type of battery to make it work. In your house, there are lots of things that use electricity, like your TV, your lights, and your fridge. Electricity is like a special kind of battery that we use to make things work.

Now imagine that there are special wires in your house that carry the electricity from the power plant to your toys (or appliances). These wires are like the roads that your toy cars drive on. They are hidden inside the walls and ceilings of your home. You can’t see them, but they’re there.

When the electricity comes into your house, it goes into something called the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker is like a special switch that can turn off the electricity if something isn’t working right. It keeps your house safe from too much electricity and can stop a fire from starting.

From the circuit breaker, the electricity goes through special wires to each room in your house. These wires are like the roads that your toy cars drive on. They lead to special outlets where you can plug in your toys or appliances.

If you want to turn on the lights in your room, you flip a switch. This switch is like a special bridge that connects two wires together. When you flip the switch, it connects the wires and lets the electricity flow through to the light bulb. The light bulb uses the electricity to make light for you to see.

So, that’s how home wiring works! It’s like a big toy box filled with different toys, each with their own battery. The electricity is like a special battery that powers everything, and the wires are like the roads that take the electricity to each toy. And the circuit breaker is like a safety switch that keeps everything in your house safe.
