ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Homo Ludens

Homo ludens refers to the idea that humans (that's us!) are playful beings. Just like when we play with toys, games or even make-believe games, we are expressing our inner need to experiment and explore the world around us. This play is something we instinctively do in order to learn new things and have fun at the same time.

So, just like how a puppy might playfully chase its own tail, or a kitten might swat at a ball of yarn, we humans have this same instinct to play in order to learn and explore. This play can take many different forms, such as running around outside with friends, building forts, or even playing video games.

But what's really cool about humans is that we're able to take our playing to the next level by creating all sorts of advanced games and rules to follow. This allows us to explore and experiment with different scenarios and situations, without any of the real-life risk or consequences.

So, in short, Homo Ludens is the idea that humans are naturally playful, and that this playfulness is actually an important part of how we learn and grow!
