ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Howe correspondence

Okay, so you know how sometimes you need to send a message to someone who isn't right next to you? Maybe you use a phone or a computer to do that.

Well, a long time ago - back when George Washington was alive - people didn't have phones or computers to send messages to each other. They had to write letters by hand and send them in the mail.

One man named Elias Howe had a special job where he would carry letters from one place to another. He had to be really good at riding horses and making sure the letters didn't get lost or damaged on the way.

But sometimes, people would write letters that were secret or important. They didn't want anyone else to read them! So Elias thought of a cool way to keep those letters safe.

He would make a special code using dots and dashes. Each letter would have its own code, kind of like a secret password. When he got the letter, he would use the code to read it and then deliver it to the right person.

This way, even if someone tried to sneak a peek at the letter, they wouldn't know what it said because they wouldn't know the code. It was like a secret language that only the people who knew the code could understand.

And that's how Elias Howe helped keep people's messages safe and private a long, long time ago!
