ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Howling

Howling is when dogs make loud and long sounds that can be heard from far away. It's like singing, but instead of using words, they use their voices.

Dogs howl to communicate with each other. They do this to say things like "hey, I'm over here!" or "this is my territory, stay away!" Howling is also a way for dogs to show that they are feeling a certain way, like when they are happy or sad.

Sometimes, when one dog starts howling, other dogs in the area will hear it and start howling too. This is called a howl chorus. It's like a big group of dogs singing together!

People might not always like it when dogs howl, especially if it's late at night and they're trying to sleep. But it's important to remember that howling is a natural behavior for dogs and that they do it to communicate with each other. Just like humans talk to each other, dogs use howling to talk to each other.
