ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Huma bird

Sure, I can definitely explain hummingbirds to you like you're five years old!

So, a hummingbird is a tiny little bird that is known for its fast-flying and for the humming noise that it makes when it flaps its wings. They are native to North and South America, and there are many different species of hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds are really special because they are the only species of bird that can hover in mid-air. That means they can stay in one spot in the air, like a helicopter, even though they are flapping their wings really fast. They use this hovering ability to feed on nectar from flowers.

In fact, hummingbirds love nectar so much that they have a special long, thin beak that is perfectly shaped for reaching deep into flowers to get it. They also eat insects and spiders, which is another reason why they need to be able to hover - they can catch their prey in mid-air!

Hummingbirds are very small, usually no bigger than your hand. They come in all different colors, like green, red, blue, and purple. Some species of hummingbirds even have iridescent feathers, which means their feathers can look like they are changing colors depending on how the light hits them.

So, to sum up, hummingbirds are tiny birds that can hover in mid-air, use their long beaks to feed on nectar and catch insects, and come in all sorts of beautiful colors. They are really amazing creatures!
