The Human Variome Project is a worldwide effort to collect genetic information about the different forms of different genes in people. It's like a giant library of genetic information about people. Every person has two copies of each gene- one from their mom, and one from their dad. We call this gene version a 'variant', and sometimes these variants are different between people. The Human Variome Project collects information about all of these different variants found in different people, and puts it into a big database that scientists can use to study genetic diseases and differences between people. By cataloging all the different kinds of genes we have, the Human Variome Project is helping us to better understand how our genes impact our health.
