ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hydrazinium

Hydrazinium is a funny kind of molecule that scientists use to help make other things. It's like a little helper that can make things happen.

But, first, let's talk about what a molecule is. You know how when we write words we use letters, like "cat" has the letters c-a-t? Well, molecules are made up of teeny tiny things called atoms that stick together to make a bigger thing, just like how letters stick together to make words.

Hydrazinium is made up of two nitrogen atoms and four hydrogen atoms, all stuck together in a specific way. Scientists call it NH2NH2 because of the types of atoms in it.

Now here's where it gets cool: hydrazinium can do something called "reduce" other things. This means that hydrazinium can take away some of the oxygen or other atoms from molecules it meets. This helps scientists make other things that they want.

But-- and this is important-- hydrazinium can be really dangerous if people don't know how to handle it carefully. Just like how we have to be careful with hot stoves or sharp knives, scientists have to be very careful with hydrazinium so they don't get hurt.

So, in short, hydrazinium is a special molecule that can help scientists make other things, but it's important to be very careful with it!
