When people go deep underwater, they might breathe in a gas called nitrogen. Nitrogen is normal to breathe in when we’re outside, but when we go deep in the water, it can make us feel funny. This is called nitrogen narcosis.
Now, some people use a gas called hydrogen instead of nitrogen when they go deep underwater. Hydrogen is different from nitrogen, and it can also make people feel funny. This is called hydrogen narcosis.
Just like when we feel dizzy or tired when we breathe in alcohol or medicine, people can feel strange when they breathe in hydrogen underwater. They might have a hard time thinking clearly or moving how they want to.
This is why deep-sea divers need special training and equipment to make sure they stay safe when they’re exposed to these gases. Even though they might feel funny, they need to make sure they don’t make any mistakes that could hurt themselves or their friends.
