ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hydronium

Hey there! Do you know what water is? It's a liquid that you can drink and swim in. Water is made up of really tiny things called molecules.

One molecule of water has two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. Sometimes, one of the hydrogen atoms in a water molecule can break apart from the oxygen and join up with another water molecule.

When this happens, the water molecule that lost a hydrogen atom is now called a hydronium ion. It's a special thing because it has an extra positive charge, which means it's a bit like a superhero that can do special things.

Hydronium ions are really important because they help make things acidic. You know how an orange tastes sour? That's because it's acidic, and hydronium ions are part of what makes it that way.

So, to sum up:

- Water is made up of tiny things called molecules
- A hydronium ion is a special kind of molecule that happens when a hydrogen atom breaks off a water molecule
- Hydronium ions can make things acidic, like sour oranges.
