ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hyperforeignism

Hyperforeignism refers to the way that people mispronounce words from different languages by making them sound more foreign than they should. It's kind of like when you try to speak a different language but you don't really know how to say the words correctly, so you make them sound extra fancy or different than how they really sound in that language.

For example, say you're trying to say "croissant," which is a French word for a type of pastry. If you've never heard anyone say "croissant" before, you might say it like "cruh-sant" instead of "kwah-sahn," which is how it's actually pronounced in French. This is an example of hyperforeignism because you're trying to make the word sound fancy and foreign, but you're actually mispronouncing it.

Hyperforeignism can happen with any language, not just French. So if you're trying to say a word from Chinese, Japanese, Italian, or any other language, you might accidentally make it sound more foreign than it should. The important thing is to try your best to learn how to say words correctly, so you can communicate more effectively and respectfully with people from different backgrounds.
