Hypothermia is when your body gets very, very cold. When you go outside in cold weather or go swimming in cold water, your body can lose heat faster than it can make heat to keep you warm. This is like having a car that has a leak in the gas tank - the gas (heat) is leaving faster than it can be refilled.
When your body loses too much heat, it can't do things like move or think as well as it normally does. It's like trying to drive a car in the winter with a dead battery - the car can't work properly. Your body might get numb and you might feel sleepy or confused. If it gets really bad, your body might stop working altogether, kind of like a toy that runs out of batteries. That's why it's important to always dress warmly in cold weather and to stay safe when swimming or playing in cold water.
