ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Identity by type

Have you ever had to show something to prove who you are? Like a driver's license or a passport? That thing you showed is called your identity. Now, people can also figure out who you are by looking at what you're like. That's called identity by type.

Let's say you're a boy who likes playing with trains and wearing superhero costumes. People can figure out that you're a boy who likes those things just by looking at you and your behavior. That's your identity by type.

Similarly, if you're a girl who likes playing with dolls and wearing dresses, people can figure out that you're a girl who likes those things just by looking at you and your behavior. That's her identity by type.

So, identity by type is all about figuring out who you are by looking at what you're like and the things you do. It's a way for people to identify you without you having to show any specific documents.
