An idiophone is a musical instrument that makes sound by itself without needing anything else added to it, like strings or a reed. These instruments are often made of materials that naturally make noise when they are hit, shaken or scraped. For example, a xylophone is an idiophone because it makes sound when a mallet hits the wooden bars. A cowbell is another example of an idiophone because it makes sound when it is struck with a stick. Essentially, idiophones are instruments that don't need anything else to make a sound and can create music just by themselves!
