ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ilulissat

Ilulissat is a really cool place that is very far away in a country called Greenland. It's a small town but it has a really big glacier that is very special. The glacier's name is Jakobshavn Glacier but people call it Ilulissat Icefjord sometimes.

The glacier is so special because it's moving really fast! It moves about 50 meters (164 feet) every day which is like a whole soccer field distance! That's because it's melting and falling into the ocean. When it falls, it makes a really loud noise that you can hear from far away, like a big BOOM! People say that it sounds like thunder or fireworks.

Ilulissat isn't just cool because of the glacier though. People live there and they have their own language called Greenlandic. Sometimes they speak Danish too but mostly they speak Greenlandic. They eat food like fish and meat that come from the ocean and the land. They also have sled dogs that help them travel over the ice and snow.

Even though Ilulissat is very far away and it can be really cold there, it's a very special place that lots of people like to visit. They go there to see the glacier and learn about the people that live there. Maybe one day you can go too!
