ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Immigration reform

Immigration reform is all about changing the laws in our country about who can come from other countries to live and work here. It's important because it helps to decide who can come legally and safely, who can come to study in our schools and universities, and who can work here. It also decides if someone can stay in the United States and become a citizen, or if they must go back and live in the country they came from. Sometimes our country's leaders don't agree about what immigration laws should be in place, so immigration reform talks help us decide what immigration laws should stay and which ones should be changed.
